Muhammad Yunus is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist and social entrepreneur who founded the Grameen Bank, a microfinance organization that has provided small loans to millions of poor people, mostly women, in Bangladesh. Yunus's work has helped to lift millions of people out of poverty and has inspired microfinance programs around the world.
Banker to the Poor tells the extraordinary story of Yunus's life and work. Yunus was born in a poor village in Bangladesh in 1940. He went on to study economics at Dhaka University and then at Vanderbilt University in the United States. After completing his studies, Yunus returned to Bangladesh and began working as a professor of economics at Chittagong University.
In 1976, Yunus was inspired by the plight of the poor women in his village. He realized that these women were trapped in a cycle of poverty because they did not have access to credit. Yunus decided to start a bank that would provide small loans to these women so that they could start their own businesses and lift themselves out of poverty.
Yunus's bank, Grameen Bank, was founded in 1983. Grameen Bank has provided loans to more than 9 million poor people in Bangladesh, and has helped to lift millions of people out of poverty. Grameen Bank has also inspired the creation of microfinance programs in more than 100 countries around the world.
Banker to the Poor is a must-read for anyone interested in social justice, economic development, or the power of individual actions to make a difference in the world. Yunus's story is an inspiration to us all, and his work has made a real difference in the lives of millions of people.
