In 1903, he joined the Montreal Wanderers, one of the top teams in the world at the time. Patrick played for the Wanderers for five seasons, and he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1906.

In 1908, Patrick joined the Renfrew Creamery Kings, a team in the newly formed National Hockey Association (NHA). The NHA was the first professional hockey league in the world, and Patrick was one of its most dominant players. In 1913, Patrick moved to the New York Rangers, where he became the team's first general manager. He also coached the team for a time, and he helped the Rangers win their first Stanley Cup in 1928.

Patrick left the Rangers in 1934, and he joined the Boston Bruins. He coached the Bruins for three seasons, and he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1939.

Patrick retired from coaching in 1940, but he remained active in hockey for many years. He was a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee for many years, and he helped to found the Lester Patrick Trophy, which is awarded annually to the outstanding American-born player in the NHL.
